“Drat!” She followed up with a hand cradling her forehead, “He called me his mate while he was poked up out of the summoning circle trap.”

The Liaison twisted his chair around with a smile. “Oh that does make things easier. If Ezz is willing to claim you as his mate then that’s one problem we don’t have to deal with. It won’t be a case of just seduce and release,” he coughed into his fist. “Sorry. That one was too good to not share,” he grinned. “Release. Get it. Don’t worry you will and love it, speaking from experience.”

Carefully she set the bottle of Starbucks Coffee Mocha down so as not to spill it on the book she was reading. The Liaison had warned her about taking extreme care with any of his books she decided to peruse while she waited for him to research her case. She didn’t want to think about what Associating with Demons and their Magic hyped up on coffee and chocolate might be capable of doing. Placing the book even more carefully on the chair she had just left, she set her hands more carefully still on the Liaison’s desk that didn’t have any computer equipment on it.

“Now look,” she calmly spoke through clenched teeth. “Regardless of his intentions, they aren’t my intentions. I don’t know him, anything about who he is other than his being a demon. Is he a good person that in 5 years, 20 years, 50 years, 150 years, I will still be able to say ‘this is my mate, it was the best day of my life when he claimed me’? Or, in 2 days will I be looking for sharp pointed objects to kill him with?”

The Liaison’s eyes had rounded slightly at the last part. “Maybe I should be more concerned for the welfare of the demon.” He made a hunt through one of the desk drawers and pulled out what looked like a dull black stone plaque. “Here, put your hand on this and hold it there ‘til it changes color.”

“What if it doesn’t change color and why am I doing this?”

“It will change color and you’ll just have to keep your hand on it until it does,” his smile had teeth in it. “It won’t release your hand until it does,” he shrugged Read more... )

‘Oo-kay,’ she mentally drew out the word, they’d told them in her intro to Demonology class that the Demon Liaison Office was located in an open double entranced hall. She dithered outside the ornately decorated stone archway to that passage. The Demon Liaison Office door was so close she could practically touch the door. It was right there on the left, maybe 5 steps past the archway. There was a chip out of the stone entrance, about knee level and she wondered, guessed what could have made it. Something substantial to make that big of a chip, she didn’t want to know considering its proximity to the Liaison Office. All the wizard scenes from Harry Potter, were not real … were they?, flashed before her eyes and she did a quick compare and contrast. Nah, couldn’t be. The movie wasn’t real life… but then again most people didn’t think demons and other magical beings were either.

Taking out a handful of pebbles she tossed them one after another into the corridor tracing out her path. Before she got there the door opened and an annoyed man stuck his head out to frown at her.

“I do wish you would stop doing that. I understand why but the Liaison’s Office is protected so gather up your,” he regarded the small rocks, “protective pebbles and come in.” He glanced out the door behind her and his frown grew.

His growled, “You too,” to that someone had her practically jump up from her gathering to stand and turn toward the doorway. There was nothing there and she quickly turned to look at the man who had an amused grin on his face.

“Gotcha. Come on in and tell me about it.”

She barely kept her own growl sub-audible, well maybe not sub-audible because the man’s grin grew. Demons and their liaison, made of the same cloth.

“I heard that.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

Livres :

- Buffy the Vampire Slayer, saison 2 : On avance !
- Game of Thrones, saison 8 : à nous l'épisode 2 !

Whales in quantity all sleeping vertically. It's eerie seeing them.

"The animals were inactive and unresponsive, even when the scientists approached them in a boat, but all the whales awakened quickly and swam away when the boat brushed against one of them and woke it up, the study authors reported.

Further observations revealed that the sperm whales entered these sleeping states by first descending head-down to a depth several times that of their bodies, then passively turning head-up and drifting closer to the surface. The findings showed that sperm whales around the world practice this vertical sleeping posture — but infrequently, spending only about 7 percent of their time asleep, ..."

"Sometimes I feel that he is as mysterious as the gods, and that he is hiding something of vital importance from me. Something that would transform my life."

Few events are more thrilling in a young man's life than a blood feud between two villages. Or so Adrian thought.

Torn between affection toward his traditional-minded father and worship of his peace-loving, heretical priest, Adrian finds himself caught between two incompatible visions of his duty to the gods. Then the Jackal God sends Adrian a message that will disrupt his world and send him fleeing to a new and perilous life.

LifePrison

"'You have committed a vile and savage act, one that any other nation would punish with death. Our punishment, on the other hand, will only be to give you what you want. You have sought to live in a world without boundaries of civilization, and such a world shall henceforth be your dwelling place.'"

A cold-hearted murderer. A vicious abuser. A young man hiding a shameful secret. A bewildered immigrant. A pure-minded spy.

All of these men have found their appointed places at Mercy Life Prison, where it is easy to tell who your enemies are. But a new visitor to Mercy is about to challenge decades-old customs. Now these men's worst enemies may be hiding behind masks . . . and so may their closest allies.

Checkmate

"It's all about torture. That's what I didn't understand for a long time. The High Seeker has been seeking out and punishing those of us who wish to show greater mercy to the prisoners than the Code allows. Those of us who question whether it's right to torture prisoners."

The Eternal Dungeon is no longer a prison. It's a battlefield.

Split apart from their closest loves and friends, a small group of prison-workers seek to abolish the use of torture against prisoners in the queendom's royal dungeon. Time is running out, for the deadly High Seeker has already flogged and executed prison-workers who oppose his policies.

Do the reformers have enough time and skill to bring about radical change in the dungeon? Will they be able to overcome their mistrust of one another?

Lentil Soup
Recipe by Lidia Bastianich, co-owner, Lidia’s Kansas City, reprinted with permission from Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine

http://www.feastmagazine.com/cook/starters_and_sides/article_b04d731c-b016-11e6-89d1-f3b1cc2e798f.html

Serves | 4 to 6 |

4 oz pancetta, cut into small chunks
4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
2 medium carrots, peeled, large dice
2 stalks celery, large dice
1 small onion, large dice
2 cups loosely packed fresh Italian parsley leaves
1 28-oz can San Marzano tomatoes, crushed by hand
2 bay leaves
4 quarts cold water
1 lb brown lentils, rinsed
1 Tbsp kosher salt
1 cup long-grain rice
freshly grated Grana Padano (to serve) cheese

Preparation

In the bowl of a food processor, combine pancetta and garlic, and process until smooth. Heat a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, and add olive oil. When hot, add pancetta mixture, and stir until fat renders, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in the bowl of food processor, combine carrots, celery, onion and parsley. Process until slightly chunky. When pancetta mixture has rendered, add processed vegetables to Dutch oven, and cook, stirring until dried out, about 5 minutes.

Add tomatoes; fill emptied can with water, and pour into pancetta mixture. Add bay leaves and cold water to Dutch oven. Bring to a boil, and simmer rapidly, uncovered, until soup is reduced by a fourth, about 1 hour. Add lentils, cover and cook, 15 to 20 minutes.

Add salt and rice to Dutch oven, and stir. Simmer until rice is al dente. Don’t overcook – rice will continue cooking in soup as you serve it. Remove bay leaves. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle of cheese.

Lentil & Rice Soup
http://www.wgbh.org/blogs/recipes/Rice--Lentils

Ingredients
2 ounces pancetta or bacon, cut in pieces
1 cup onion cut in 1-inch chunks
1 cup carrot cut in 1-inch chunks
1 cup celery cut in 1-inch chunks
6 fresh sage leaves
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons tomato paste
½ cup dry white wine
8 to 10 cups hot water
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 ½ cups lentils, rinsed and picked over
1 ½ cups Italian short-grain rice, such as Arborio, Carnaroli, or Vialone Nano
1 cup chopped scallions
½ cup grated Grana Padano or Parmigiano-Reggiano, plus more for passing

Directions
Drop the pancetta or bacon pieces into the food-processor bowl, and pulse several times, to chop the meat into small bits. Scrape all the chopped pancetta right into the heavy saucepan. Put the onion, carrot, and celery chunks and the sage leaves into the empty food-processor bowl, and mince together into a fine-textured pestata.

Put the butter and olive oil into the saucepan with the minced pancetta, and set over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring, as the butter melts and the fat starts to render. When the pancetta is sizzling, scrape in the vegetable pestata, and stir it around the pan until it has dried and begins to stick, 4 minutes or so. Clear a space on the pan bottom, and drop in the tomato paste, toast it in the hot spot for a minute, then stir together with the pestata.

Raise the heat, pour in the white wine, and cook, stirring, until the wine has almost completely evaporated. Pour in 8 cups of hot water and the tablespoon salt, stir well, and heat to the boil. (Add all 10 cups of hot water if you want to serve the rice and lentils as a thick soup rather than a denser riso.)

Cover the pan, and reduce the heat slightly, to keep the water at a moderate boil, and let it bubble for 20 minutes or so, to develop the flavors.

Stir in the lentils, return to a gentle boil, and cook, partially covered, stirring occasionally, until the lentils just start to soften, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the rice, return to a bubbling simmer, and cook, cover ajar, until the rice is al dente, 13 minutes or so. If the dish is thickening more than you like, lower the heat and cover the pan completely. If it seems too thin and wet, remove the cover and cook at a faster boil. When the rice and lentils are fully cooked, turn off the heat. Stir in the scallions and grated cheese.

Serve in warm bowls, passing more cheese at the table.

Creepy Cute Bunny Harvestman
Posted by Creature Features on July 20, 2017

This bizarre looking “Bunny Harvestman” from the South American rainforest looks like a mad scientist grafted a rabbit's head onto an octet of spindly spider legs.

Metagryne bicolumnata, to give it its official scientific name, was beautifully photographed on July 11th of 2017 by Flickr member Andreas Kay (Ecuador Megadiverso).

Though members of the Arachnid class, harvestmen (also known as “daddy longlegs”) are not spiders though they do have eight legs. We're sure that factoid makes you feel better, assuming you haven't already run off screaming.

It says:
These are super easy to make, and come with a sweet and salty combination of flavors that we absolutely go nuts for! A crisp cookie base is covered with a chewy filling, and that chewy filling is topped with a delightfully delicious swirl of caramel and nuts. Our secret here is to toast the nuts before they go on top of the bars. Toasting really brings out that nutty flavor and makes the cookie taste a little more decadent and rich than it would otherwise.
